These 'free speech' provincetown vacationing boyz and girlz ( and they are more like the boys than they are) immediately begin to spout conspiracy, and blackmail scenarios in the guise of 'fair reporting'. No rational mind will ever be interested in knowing that we (the world that is) have passed our peak oil production more than a decade ago.

Gas, as any commodity in a free market economy will fluctuate, and these minor depressions in consumer costs will of course be associated with a political conspiracy to engender votes. I''m sure it's your patchouli fumes that have addled your grey matter to a point of limiting your ability to think independantly. Don't believe what is placed in front out you via the mass media BIG MOMENT OF TRUTH FOR YA HERE NORM..ARE YA SITTING DOWN? GOOD, HERE IT IS: THE MEDIA LIES TO US. Essay 5

The price we pay for illegal aliens

"The business of America is business". -Calvin Coolidge.

And business has been very good.

To feed the great furnace of industry America has mined its natural and
human resources with great efficiency. Too much efficiency perhaps. Beginning
with the industrial revolution, workers have been drawn to work the factories of
the big city. As we move to a service based economy, the requirements of that
work force continued to grow and evolve as well. This continual draw requires
the work force to be replenished as it moves upwards. Just below the level of
unskilled worker is the illegal alien, a bottomless well from which the bottom
of the American workforce is being drawn.

The illegal alien represents a class of employment where there is no step
up, no promotion and unemployment is as close as the end of the day. They work
on our farms; they build our schools, our roads and make our clothes. In April
of 1999, a report to Congress, the General Accounting Office (GAO) tried to,
pardon the pun, account for all of the illegal aliens at work in our country.
By their estimate, of the 133 million Americans at work, three to five and a
half million were illegal aliens. This report continued to break down the
estimates to say 37% of the agricultural workers, 23% of the meat packing
industry, 39% of certain segments of construction and a whopping 41% of the
garment industry workers in the Los Angeles basin are illegal aliens (Removic).
These numbers reveal that there is a significant economic contribution being
made by the illegal alien. The question, what is it costing America needs to be
explored.

A fair argument could be made that the wages paid to the illegal alien is
artificially low, and so only attracts these kinds of workers. However, this
would only be true in a failing economy as competition for employment positions
increases, and we are not in a failing economy. If an employer offers a certain
wage for labor and there aren't any takers then wages would have to be raised
until those positions were filled. Right now, we are in a roughly balanced
economy where wages and inflation and consumer prices are within arms reach of
each other. This also means that employers looking to spend as little as
possible are finding a bargain with the illegal alien.

There are several indices that should be explored in looking into the
economic and social costs of using the illegal alien in the American workforce.
There are some obvious places where one could look, such as the schools systems,
healthcare providers or any state mandated program that provides assistance to
the illegal alien. These places have production costs that are easily measured.
These services the American public provides are an expense supported by tax
dollars. Some items like police and national security are easy to relate to the
costs of the illegal alien. What many don't realize that other, expensive
programs like trash pick up, and public health monitoring are incurring costs
associated with the illegal alien.

In the illegal alien population, there are law abiders and the
lawbreakers. It would appear that one significant cost of the illegal alien is
the burden they place on the court systems. Lets start at the border and work
our way north. In an August 2002 special report from the Bureau of Justice
Statistics, the authors reflecting on the changes the 1996 reform act on
immigration, say the addition of 5 thousand more agents almost doubled the
number of arrests for illegal immigration (Scalia, Immigration Offenders..).
These numbers are from the years before September 11 increased the scrutiny our
borders received. In the last decade, the number of INS and Border Patrol agents
in the southwest has increased to more that twice that.

That's a lot of new federal wages being paid out of the public coffer, and
so has the success of protecting our borders. This also means over worked public
defendants and over crowded prisons. In 2000 over 16 thousand illegal aliens
were processed thru one court system alone. The upside to this increase in court
activity is longer jail terms and higher conviction rates. The balance sheet
shows we're deeply in the red and all we have done is arrest the illegal alien
and begun to prosecute them.

These prosecutions have not concluded without success-- There are upwards
of 70,000 illegal aliens in local, state or federal prisons, all duly prosecuted
for a variety of crimes ranging from, obviously, illegal immigration, to drugs,
weapons and homicide (Scalia, Noncitizens..). Suspiciously, the FBI has not
commented on organized crime nor offered any RICO numbers on the illegal aliens
in this country. With the total illegal alien population hovering around 7
million, the gangs that now operate between Mexico and U. S. major cities are
beginning to get the scrutiny once reserved for European organized crime
syndicates, which will put more illegal aliens in prison.

Sidebar: The careful reader might begin to suspect that some of the source
material used to support this essay is, at best, a bit dated. Admittedly so, and
for two reasons. In the last few years, the Federal and state governments focus
on these issues provides the researcher a new level of detail that is not
available currently, One such detail is increasing border agent numbers and the
resultant increase in arrest and prosecutions rates. The other reason for
looking at data in this range is these extrapolations are based on data that was
collected in the 2000 national census. This is the same information our
legislative and executive branches are look to when making policy decisions.
This writer prefers to use that same information and portray it in a manner
consistent with fairness and still support a view.

Almost 10 percent of the entire illegal alien population is in prison,
costing the taxpayer upwards of 5.8 billion in the last three fiscal years
ending 2004 (Stana. Information on Criminal Aliens). Our prisons are over
crowded with illegal aliens most of whom are repeat offenders. Another study of
55 thousand illegal aliens showed that they were arrested on the average of 8
times each for nearly a half million times the federal, state or local
authorities have intervened in the interest of public safety (Stana. Information
on Certain Illegal Aliens.. ).

The revolving door of local courts and prisons has only served to add to
the cost of the illegal alien in our society by allowing the criminal portion of
the illegal alien population to repeat their crimes multiple times before they
are prosecuted locked away. And lets not forget the victims of these crimes. The
drugs they peddle go to addicts that will need treatment. Victims of larceny and
assault have losses. The events on the other side of the crime have costs
associated with them that are extremely hard to put a dollar amount on, but we
know exist.

So we have taken out that element of the illegal alien, which cannot abide
by any law and placed them in prison. What's left? More than 6 million who
participate in our society in some constructive manner. They draw on our
goodwill and generosity and repay us with their simple labor. Perhaps, simple is
not entirely true. Most illegal aliens seeking employment that pays better than
$4.00 /hr will need a set of documents that identify them and give them a
taxpayer identification number. Unfortunately, there is no mathematical
possibility that the paltry sum of social assessments the illegal alien
contributes is equal to the social benefits reaped by that population.

One of the most expensive items in any ones budget is healthcare. For the
uninsured of Massachusetts, there is a safety net, called the Uncompensated Care
Pool. It's a fairly simple process of the legislature measuring how much each
healthcare provider spent in the previous year to provide care of those who
could not afford to pay. Finding the funding and splitting up the proceeds is
usually conducted at the state level. As you could expect, there is almost
mandatory, inflationary accounting that goes into the reporting process. With
this in mind, understanding that over 450,000 persons in Massachusetts received
healthcare benefits totaling a tic over $701 million via the uncompensated care
pool (Lischko). To be fair, all persons reported in this annual report needed
and received healthcare. To apply this accounting to the national number of
illegal aliens, we would first have to divide them into those that received some
healthcare intervention in the last year and those who remained healthy. A
reasonable, ten-fold increase is more likely the amount spent nationally
providing healthcare to the illegal alien.

The amount spent on providing healthcare for the illegal alien is not a
voluntary expenditure. It is the result of lenient courts, belief in basic human
rights and good old American generosity. And this is not a secret amongst the
illegal population; rather it is another reason for entering this country. Free
treatment for a rare or complex disease is just the tip of the iceberg. Being
barred from asking any applicants residential status also prevents the social
interventionist from withholding any programs reserved for residents. In
layman's terms, when you appear in a clinic for health care, you open the door
not only to free healthcare, you also are made aware of everything that may be
of benefit to you, i.e.: food, shelter, housing, transportation and
translational services if needed. Think of the cost savings in this country if
we were to assign our healthcare dollars to an individual whose residency could
be verified before the first bandaid was dispensed.

On the national healthcare scene, Madeline Cosman, Ph. D., Esq. in a recent
article in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons rails against the
Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. Its intent is to protect
those Americans who present to an emergency room for treatment and is one the
mandate that makes denial of treatment a criminal offence. This act makes no
provision for compensating those who provide it. The individual states are
often left to decide how those fees get covered. From the illegal alien point of
view, this Act means that there is no possibility of being turned down for
presenting to an ER for a hangnail, and getting that treatment in the most
expensive setting possible (Cosman). By the way, this means the illegal aliens
can also have their babies here as well, creating another conundrum, baby
anchors.

In the course of human events, man and woman will get together and produce
a baby. If that baby is born in the US, it is considered a citizen. This also
instantly qualifies the family for welfare, food stamps, housing assistance, in
essence the works. The state of California had over 700,000 illegal aliens on
its rolls because in part by anchor babies. The parents, who can not be deported
at this point, also quality for Supplemental Security Income, and, among other
goodies, respite baby sitters-- should the desire to dine alone arise. Respite
Baby sitters? For illegal aliens? It is truly mind boggling the social
engineering that goes into the design of the programs that provide good and
services to the needy of this great nation. Or perhaps it would be better said,
'It's amazing how many things you can think of when you are spending someone
else's money'.

Baby sitters and free trips to the mall are small potatoes when compared to
the hazardous contribution the illegal alien makes the maintenance of American
health. Infectious disease is the unwanted gift the illegal alien brings the
U.S. Drug resistant strains of tuberculosis that come over the border are lethal
to 60% of those infected. The good news is that we can treat the disease, but it
will cost around $250,000 a person to cure. The bad news is that those same
illegal aliens will infect another 10 to 30 people (Cosman). It's a gift that
keeps on costing the U.S. taxpayer long after the giver is gone.

This might not be so bad if we knew the exact number of persons coming over
the border with the infection. We don't, and probably never will. What we do
know is that in neighborhoods where illegal aliens tend to populate, the TB rate
goes up. In one suburban setting it jumped 17% --Bad; in another the rate of new
cases skyrocketed to 188%- - a crisis on anyone's scale. The Center for Disease
Control claims 66% originates in Mexico, the Philippines or Vietnam (Cosman).
There is no possible way to place a dollar figure on the effects that one
disease like TB has on the national economy, especially when one considers that
all of those infected have not been discovered, let alone treated. But if one
could take the kinds of costs that TB implies, and compound it by all the other
diseases that are infecting law abiding Americans one would easily see a
national healthcare crisis on the horizon

Diseases like Hepatitis, Malaria, Dengue Fever, Leprosy (yes the biblical
scourge is back!) and Chagas is running towards the American healthcare system
like a herd of buffalo on stampede. Problem is, we have nothing to stop it.

Medicine in America is big business. Large medical corporations, insurance
companies, hospital systems that measure numbers of active patients in the
millions-all of these institutions have watched their bottom line sink when
compelled to treat those who can not afford to pay.

Attempts to provide medical care only to those who truly need it, is
usually trumped at the legislative or judicial level. As the system is
configured, every day is open house. Maureen Sullivan-Hahn RN, a case manager at
the Lynn community Health Center in Massachusetts relates a common interview
scenario that clearly demonstrates the attitude the illegal alien carries with
them when being screened. New patients will present themselves to the clinic
with an issue requiring attention. During the induction process, the patient is
asked what brings them here. Invariably, they are told through either their
community or in the native land, that you need to go to Massachusetts if you
want the best doctors. One patient from an island in the Caribbean went so far
as to say that there are signs and handbills posted about the clinics and
hospitals in America. It would appear that word of the healthcare and other
social programs has become so common knowledge that it's being advertised in
other countries. Healthcare for the most part is a very leaky ship. There is no
captain, no one is bailing and the passengers are still being loaded on. The
question is when will it sink.
Illegal aliens arrive not in drips and drabs, but in batches and family
units. Mother and father will most likely go to work, leaving children, thanks
to a 1982 Supreme Court ruling, in the public school system. According to Jerry
Sepers article in The Washington Times, the state of California alone is
estimating the cost of providing a kindergarten to 12th grade education at $7.7
billion a year. This figure only covers the children of illegal aliens.
Considering that California has one of the largest illegal alien populations,
meeting the financial requirements has created a hardship that resulted in
Proposition 187.

Proposition 187 was an attempt to disengage the illegal alien from those
services that were funded at the state and local levels. The added expenditure
the illegal alien imposed on the education and public assistance programs was
cause, in part, of the economic crisis of California in the mid 1990's. The
public spoke in November of that
Year. Unfortunately, this is when the courts began to uphold the wishes of the
state over federal policy. The Supreme Court maintained that the choice of what
to do with the illegal alien falls under the purvey of the federal government,
thus superceding the individual states desire to not bankrupt itself. Needless
to say, the deficit continues to grow in while no court date to settle the
matter is forth coming.

With California spending $7.7 billion -1995- dollars a year on illegal alien
education, Jerry Sepers article in The Washington Times shows they must surely
have the lion's share of that burden, yes? NO. All states are compelled to
provide similar serves to all illegal aliens, given that the federal government
sets that ball in motions and lets it bounce around within each states border as
it sees fit. The above figures are for a large state, but are a decade old. How
much is being spent in California now?

In Minnesota last December, the Department of Administrations prepared a report
for Governor Pawlenty detailing the expenditures that states efforts to educate
the children of illegal aliens. This numbers are a bit flawed in that it used
fairly solid but older estimate of the illegal alien population, then
extrapolated to the present, but arrives at a reasonable number of 80 to 85
thousand illegal aliens in Minnesota at the time of the report. Bottom line on
education costs for 17,000 children is 146 to 158 million dollars a year. Can
that be right? Yes, spending around $8500 per year to educate a child is not an
unreasonable amount. Multiply this per child amount by the number of children
nationally and it becomes clear why the Federal and state governments run
deficits.

Education is arguably one of the most expensive items provided to the illegal
alien. It is not with out soul that we do this, but there is a streak of
self-preservation in it as well.
Poverty is a cycle that only education can break. It is fortunate that America
is in a position to accommodate those less fortunate in our public school
systems, even with a cost that is severe at best. The payoff comes when that
anchor baby, or child of an illegal alien learns a way out of the fruit trees
and towards corporate America. Educating the child is preventing crime,
collecting taxes, and gives hope to those who receive it. From the American
perspective, can the possibility to give back to the country that gave to you
reward enough?

It is sad that even the humanitarian acts of kindness require the coin of the
realm. But that is the crux of this argument. America is not a bottomless
wellspring of golden fountains. All revenues are given to support the
maintenance of government and it's programs. During that era after World War II,
the business of America was doing exceptionally well. So much so that we might
have become a bit too generous with our aid, too lenient with our foreign policy
and a bit lax about our borders.

Enter the illegal alien, the lowest building block of the work force in this
country. They came to help feed the great furnace of industry, but more and
more, they come to feed at the public trough. Perhaps not intentionally, but
they do. By the fact of being here, illegally they are apt to be arrested but
most likely to be arrested for other charges first. Each brush with the law does
not result in a deportation, but a costly court process and return to the
streets. Perhaps on the fourth or fifth or eighth pass thru the court system
will end in a prison term that add still does not address the basic issue of
illegal presence in this country.

The federal government sets policy on handling the illegal alien and that
agenda now has the courts backing. The unending costs continue to escalate and
attempts to curtail those costs have proven futile. America needs to realign
those currently on the bench, so that the wishes each states legislative branch
is supported not stymied. At the Federal level, there is an obvious need to
establish courts to prosecute en masse and any illegal alien arrested, after
prosecution should be returned back to their country of origin. Lets ignore the
leaky border problem for now.

A word on foreign policy is due here as well. Clearly this does not need to
be a one sided effort to control the borders and port of America. What should be
used here is a little carrot and stick diplomacy. There is little documentation
that Mexico is actively patrolling the border to prevent illegal crossing, nor
is any policy present that discourages such immigration. Perhaps a little
assistance from the donor country would go a long ways in suppressing the
arrivals on causing problems once they get here--Legally.

The illegal alien once crossed into America expecting only to get a job and
a decent place to live, Nowadays, after evading the tens of thousands of newly
minted border guards, the illegal alien brings his extended family. The parents
can work; grandparents get free healthcare and the kids an education. It has
become common knowledge that the hospital emergency room has become the modern
Clinica Espanol. You will be seen, treated and given your prescriptions and
follow up visits in a virtual Walmart of healthcare settings. As an added bonus,
the American taxpayer is expected to not only pay for this type of medical
treatment, but they pray they do not get any of the lethal infectious diseases
coming across the border as well.

The cost of the illegal alien goes beyond what we can legislate, what we
can extend in human generosity. The cost of the illegal alien is American pride.
With every evening newscast announcing the reduction in wages and benefits, the
American worker, is hurt. When the American worker see jobs go to the lower paid
illegal alien, they can not compete and their pride is hurt. When the college
kid home for the summer can't find a job mowing lawns because the local
landscaper employs illegal aliens and undercuts his prices, American pride is
hurt.

The business of America is business as Calvin Coolidge once said. What he
never expected was that business greed would supplant American pride and let
profits rule above all else. Business in America is to blame for the illegal
alien in this country. If anyone were to go in search for employment and not
find any, how long before they would move on to continue the search? Business
in America is willing to employ the illegal alien and let the rest of the
country foot the bill.

Who Are the Illegal Aliens and How Americans Perceive Them

Once upon a time a First Nations people gazed out upon the eastern sea and
welcomed the original arrivals from Europe. If one were to maintain their
perspective, immigration has meant the loss of culture, history, land,
livelihood, even food and shelter. Over time, much was taken and little, very
little given back. Why? A simple summation would be that the time has come for
another society to become dominant. As Jared Diamond in Guns Germs and Steel
explains, there never has been one dominant culture that has not, over time been
overtaken by another. Mr. Diamond goes on to explain that in any given set of
variables, on group will thrive and another will fail. It is the way the human
race has honed its ability to expand, conquer and assimilate. And so, with the
influx of Europeans, their technology, disease and sheer numbers, supremacy over
the First Nations Peoples was assured. It may seem a bit odd that we were in
open conflict with them just a short while ago, and now we are defending that
very same turf instead from another invader of sorts.
In the past one hundred years the Euro centric population of America has
begun a slide down the backside of the bell curve while the Hispanic culture has
begun it's run up the hill to becoming the top of the heap (Mulder, sec. 3).
The current problem with the American perception of this change lies not with
those immigrating to this country legally, as there is little to be done about
that, but in that some come here illegally. This much smaller portion of the
entire immigrant pie is a still life painted in a very ungenerous light. From
the American point of view, illegal aliens cause a general unease in cultural
identity for the angry American. No one wants to see his or her place in
society diluted by the presence of any new subgroup. Regardless of how hard the
work may be, at the end of the week, the illegal alien puts it in his pocket,
whereas the good citizens pay their fair share of civic duty and have little
more to show for it. Compound this with the courts mandating that children of
illegal aliens must go to school or that we provide medical care at no cost and
one can see where the spark of resentment begins.

This small voiceless group is powerless to dispel the myths and
misconceptions that largely control how the mainstream population perceives
them. True, Americans by and large prefer to let the mass media determine their
opinions for them, and the fourth estate has done little to portray the illegal
alien population in an honest and unbiased manner. Perception is a lens whose
focus relies on family values, cultural influence, education and economic
achievements and other inputs. Any element within this lens can cause an
aberration, and can no longer represent the truth.

Today, pieces of the immigration puzzle have changed in terms of who, but the
reasons why remains the same. It is how those who are already here perceive the
new arrivals, which will mark their place on the scale of humanitarian acts. Who
among us has not known someone of European or African descent that has some
direct connection to the racial and cultural oppression that has occurred in the
past 100 years? These kinds of events, regardless of the native geography in
which you or your family stood, shape the attitudes and guide the response to
any particular group or culture. Think about it. Any group that is dominant
will naturally assume all other groups to be subservient. Any group that
experiences an oppressive or dominant culture will respond with either fight or
flight. On this side of the border, we unfortunately only see the flight. For
the illegal alien, coming to America, could mean more subjugation but America
also means opportunity. Perhaps the problem lies with Americans fearing the
illegal alien for being employed in a position that otherwise would be filled
with a citizen in good standing from solid European stock?

Americans need a thorough understanding of how their individual
experiences and those of their peers influence the portrayal and perception of
illegal aliens. For instance, in a cramped inner city region where there are
few jobs available and an influx of immigrants, competition for housing and jobs
can become heated. Those who have already established themselves in this country
would naturally be cautious and perceive this new wave of immigration as a
threat. It would only take a handful of people to be displaced, and a few
mistruths spoken and a whole social group will form an opinion, albeit an
incorrect one. Or in some more unfortunate instances, act on it. Jay Cocks when
writing the screenplay for the film The Gangs of New York makes excellent use of
this as the underlying theme. In real life, cultural similarity in unfamiliar
territory provides group cohesiveness- have you ever watched little clusters of
tourists shoulder to shoulder, scurry about like a flock of flightless pigeons?
Neighborhoods are often formed along ethnic lines as they share a common
language, traditions, and provide a most important ingredient for
self-preservation, familiarity. For all the similarities between any two
groups, the differences are what gets noticed and no one; especially illegal
aliens do not want to be noticed. It is this desire to not stand out in a crowd
that has taken so long for white/ European and black/African America to see the
illegal alien population. Because of the aberrations in the lens and the
distance from which they are viewed, that view is shortsighted and rather
narrow.

According to one U.S. Census Bureau estimate, of the 225 thousand illegal
immigrants who entered the U.S. in 2002, the highest percentage is of Hispanic
origin. The number of illegal aliens entering has since slowed some but
continues despite the federal focus on the issue at the moment (Mulder). To be
sure there is a trickle of Asian, European, Near and Far East as well as persons
from the African continent that enter this country as well, but it is no
surprise of the majority, given our neighbors to the south and in the Caribbean
basin. Conditions in some countries in Central America and their proximity to
the U.S. make movement here an obvious choice via the U.S. - Mexican border.
This literal line in the sand is unguarded for the most part and it is sparsely
populated. And thus we see how the average American would form the erroneous
opinion that all who cross the border from Mexico, are Mexican. Little is said
of the Central and South Americans who travel up to Mexico just to cross the
border; they just get lumped in with all other Spanish-speaking cultures. Which
brings up yet another misconception that the popular press does little to
dispel, the distinction of the various Spanish-speaking cultures.

In America, English is the common language. It is also the common language
of such far-flung places as New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. To each country,
there are some very distinct differences. It is a common thread, but by no means
binding between the cultures. The same could be said of the Spanish speaking
countries, like Honduras, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Panama and of course
Mexico. Americans are, by and large ignorant of geography and social
anthropology. Speaking in very general terms, the average American hears someone
speaking Spanish and assumes they are from some poor down trodden country and so
too they must be poor and luckless to have come here. If that same average
American could name the Secretary of the Treasury, the U.S. Attorney General,
the Secretary of Commerce, Director of the Peace Corp, the chairperson of the
EEOC or the administrator for the Small Business Administration perhaps it may
cause the realization that poverty and ignorance are two difference things
(Cabral).
Never is any thought given to the fact that there are cultural differences
that make a Mexican distinctly separate from say a Honduran. Americans hear
Spanish, see brown people and think the same for all. For all that is said in
the local communities across this country about cultural diversity, and all the
educational programs our public schools support to embrace differences, the buck
stops when it comes to being an illegal alien. It's a classic example of being
on the team or off. Illegal aliens are not afforded the typical social and
economic embrace reserved for people who arrive on our shores in the more proper
and socially acceptable manners. In the case of illegal aliens, Americans are
not shy about having very strong preconceived ideas. For anyone from a Spanish
speaking culture, it is most likely this prejudice will not be favorable. It
should be mentioned here that preconceived ideas about illegal aliens do not
follow an expected geographic distribution. In Texas for instance, where the
cultures have mixed for multiple generations, the attitude is quite positive
when compared to the reception an illegal immigrant population receives in a
northern tier state like Minnesota, where the social cost is not balanced
against the economic benefits we derive from that workforce.

Let us back up for a moment. In the above paragraph, it is mentioned that
cultural diversity programs are a prominent part of the public school programs
across this nation. Why would we need such programs? Surely the newly arrived
immigrants realize they are in a new culture and that to assimilate, they would
have to learn about what it is to be an American. The need for these programs is
to address the lack of understanding on the part of the Americans. The point to
these programs is to defuse any issues that begin to smolder when two cultures
share the same space.

The circle of parents, family and friends have the strongest influence on
the development of an informed opinion on things that are not congruous with
what goes on inside that circle. Cultural diversity programs aim to douse those
smoldering circles with education and knowledge. These programs will never
supplant the influence of the former, but can, in time, provide some context by
which future generations can respond to perceived differences. In theory, they
serve to lessen the aberration when focusing on the issues and remind us all
that we were once all immigrants here.

In the United States, immigration has become a hot button topic for many
reasons, but mainly economics and national security. Our current national
leadership has led a fair crusade against terrorism but, unfortunately allowed
some of that patriotic fervor bleed over into a long overdue and poorly thought
out domestic policy. When the Sunday morning talking heads try to relate the
images of terrorism to our illegal alien population via the debate on how to
secure our borders, how can one logically relate the two? An informed person
could not. One subject is terrorism and the other is someone wanting to feed his
family. All recent debates over the illegal alien issue stem from the war on
terrorism. The lack of being able to sort the wheat from the chaff as it comes
over the border is the true issue. Our political pundits have spun it out so
that no matter what track the U.S. policy takes, the illegal aliens will be the
ones who lose. America will always try to create the appearance of righteousness
when it comes to public opinion and to that end uses the laws it creates to
support that agenda. On the subject of illegal aliens, they fall outside the law
and can be rightfully removed.

By the mere geography under their shoes, the illegal alien becomes persona
non-g-rata allowing the opinionated fringe to speak a bit louder, tweak
perceptions, and down play the contributions the illegal alien provides this
country. They get marked as different, labeled because of the language they
speak, and are not invited to integrate with mainstream America. Natural
suspicion and the values we develop as a community prevents us from
understanding the true predicament the illegal alien is in.

Let us not forget that majority of legal immigration that occurs is of Hispanic
origin which at some point will become the dominant population. In the mean
time, as the numbers dwindle and the power shifts, there will always be those
who will maintain a mindset of prejudice. It would be better for Americans to at
least recognize some of the smears on the lens through which they view the
illegal alien, as some day, they may use that lens on us.

I know this is off subject for this blog, but I am shopping an article to be published and I wanted out there in this forum first.

As always, I welcome any critical commentary..rest assured I will respond.

In Defense of our Foreign Policy

The events on September 11, 2001 polarized the world into good and evil. America, naturally took the role of the good, and some nation states became evil. In the aftermath, the American foreign policy changed it's stance dramatically, adopting an are 'Are you with us or against us?' attitude. America opened a blackened, but very critical eye and began to re-examine the relationship it had with those nations that turned up in the post event investigation as being either directly involved, as in the case against Afghanistan, or indirectly involved, such as our own friends the British.

Some policy makers had the forethought to look into the mind of a people who committed these attacks and saw that religious zeal and xenophobia is to be defended against with extreme prejudice when it comes to the home turf. This leads into one of the essential elements of our current foreign policy- to occupy the nation states that harbor our enemies in order to seek out the heads of the perpetrators. The means to achieve this policy, when spun out to the American public was met, initially, with jingoistic enthusiasm. After a couple of years and no real measurable success, according to popular press pundits, the popularity had diminished to the point where the next presidential election my cause America to change tack and sail in a new direction.

In defense of our current policy, one must look at the yardstick by which we measure success. By occupying foreign nations in order to seek out the groups that committed the attacks on U.S. soil, we have desecrated their hallowed ground. To rid their hen house of the American wolf, all chickens must come home to roost. From another point of view, this means that no significant terrorist attacks have occurred on U.S. soil since adopting this policy. There are those who would argue that perhaps there was no intent for further attacks, or that there may have been attempts that have been foiled by our intelligence or investigative operations. Hogwash. If ever an executive needed a boost in popularity, especially in midterm, now would be the time to parade that down Pennsylvania Avenue.

The other measure for success in our current policy is serving up the heads of the perpetrators. There is only one head the American public is interested in, Osama Bin Laden, as he has become the face of 'Evil'. Sadly, the majority of this country do not understand that he is but a godlike executive, surrounded by generals, captains and foot soldiers. Yes, to serve him up on a platter would be a public relations bonus for the current leader of the free world, but lest we forget, Osama is a lonely executive who only sets the goals and policy; it is the lesser ranks that recruit, train and execute that policy. These are the heads we seek. A leader who hides in a cave is no leader, merely a preservationist.

Arundhati Roy wrote an article for The Guardian of London on September 29, 2001 entitled "The Algebra of Infinite Justice”, in which the essential commentary on American foreign policy at that time was seriously flawed and the resultant anger by so many nations produced an exponentially negative sum. The culmination being that Osama Bin Laden was trained in warfare by the United States in an effort to free Afghanistan from its Russian occupiers then turned and used that training against the United States. The young date at which this article was written makes it apparent the author chooses to paint a policy formulated in the 1970's as current. Compound this with the assumption that what policy is applied to one nation is applied to all and the product is a giant smoking hole in lower Manhattan. This is a sad dissolution of facts and personal interpretation. This author neglects to acknowledge that foreign policy is in constant evolution. Yes, policy is considered with an eye towards the future, but as events unfold, borders move and needs change, so does the guidelines to conduct with foreign nations. It is all too easy to say the result of a particular policy produced a monster, twenty years after that seed was planted. Would this author have offered this same opinion twenty years prior? How fortunate it must be to be able to predict the future, retrospectively.

In the conclusion of this article the author writes, "President Bush's ultimatum to the people of the world- 'If you are not with us, you're against us'- is a piece of presumptuous arrogance." This one sentence, quoting the president, is charged with emotional content, most likely derived from the nearness to September 11 and is out of place when discussing the cold hard facts of the world political arena. The author has used imagery and characterization as a vehicle to develop a response of shame and loathing in the reader. Any characterization of the output of American foreign policy as a 'You get what you deserve' poke in the eye will in fact create a strong emotional response, but not the one intended. Readers on this side of the pond would most likely respond to the author and the article with anger. As an aside, the mental imagery Arundhati Roy paints of a hobbling stampede of one-legged villagers under an airdrop of artificial limbs although sad is not without its Pythonesque overtones.

To infer that Mr. Bush made an ultimatum, a final statement on diplomatic terms being offered, according to Funk and Wagnalls, to a people and not to any nation is another path leading the reader in the wrong direction. To assume that all words emanating from a head of state are directed at a specific people or persons is a poor attempt to keep the article focused on the personal while attempting to dissect the national. The policy of reacting to a very large attack on our nation is a national policy. As a democracy, the people, through various cameras set this policy, not in stone but on parchment so that it can be scratched out and re-written as needed. Many believe that the sound bite of 'with us or against us' was intended more for a six o'clock news lead than a statement with a specific intent. The author of this article wants to lead the reader into believing any and all verbiage coming from the executive branch is a statement on policy which is seldom the case. More is the likely that spin and sound bites are.

Donald Rumsfeld is referred to in this article as having said that Americans must be allowed to continue with their way of life. Any interference with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as it is written in one of our founding documents, will be dealt with. We have laws to protect this within and policy to address this outside our borders. What kind of a nation would we be if a summary of our foreign policy was "Please do as you like and we will try to fit in". We, as a very powerful sovereignty, have every right to our way of life, as does all other nations and peoples. Outside our borders, we are more than willing to tolerate the differences. It is the other side of this coin is causing the problems, namely that other nations and peoples are not willing to tolerate us. True, our policy sometimes interferes with the plans of other nations, but the intent is always to preserve the American Way. When Roy implies that the Bush ultimatum is a demonstration of American arrogance, she neglects to identify which side of the coin she is on. One would suspect perhaps that the author might have been the recipient of some of the intent focus that the Good vs. Evil plan has produced. Yet again, the author may be simply ignorant enough to not realize that as the big kid on the block, we try to do good and treat all nations states equally and fairly. True, mistakes have been made, but when you give him a black eye, it's gonna hurt and punishment now has a very high priority. Arrogance is how the enemies of state wish us to be perceived. Statements on American arrogance implies jealousy by neglecting to identify the arrogance of other nations and tribal groups foreign policy which led to the attacks on September 11.

Our foreign policy must be defended as much as our borders and way of life. As a nation, we can not let the errors of past administrations override the course we set for our nations future, as such half hearted attempts in the past have. As a nation, have every right to pursue our way of life within our borders and when that is disrupted, we, as a democratic nation, will respond. This is a war on terrorism. Our policy is to take this war off our shores and place it squarely in the front yard of our enemies. There, not here. Today, not tomorrow. Diplomacy and genteel exchange ended with the first airliner crashing.

We as a sovereign nation have every right to defend ourselves against acts of terrorism and punish those who committed them, by any means possible, and we will. Defending this policy was not necessary in the months following September 11, 2001, but it is now. Americans have been led to believe that our foreign policy has nothing but a negative outcome. Perhaps. So when the naysayers gather freely in public and express their dissent, are they not in fact, speaking because of the protection our foreign policy affords them? It may be in President Bush's best interest to disclose some of the elements of our foreign policy so that Americans can truly understand where we have come from and why we went there. At the inception of this policy, it would have foolhardy to disclose any element that gives away the greater plan. Now that this card has been played, it is time the general populace understood so that it would become unnecessary to defend the the foreign policy of the United States, especially from within our own borders.

End, despite picking out Jetta's as being one of the more popular vehicles....

Norm, are you sure you linked the correct article? I really don't give a hoot
about anyones dog, including my own, except when I step in their calling cards.
These people don't have the sack to have a child, so they can pretend with a
pet, shower it with expensive baubles and comestibles and show it off while they
perch at trendy bistro's. Good for them!

But when alls said and done, there a line in the Patriot (the movie)that sums up
my opinion: "Dog makes a fine meal".

Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you've been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realize it's not so bad after all.

Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job.As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It's a wetsuit. This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is this: We have a diesel-powered industrial water heater. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea,heats it to a delightful temperature, then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose which is taped to the air hose. Now this sounds like a darn good plan, and I've used it several times with no complaints.What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wetsuit. This floods my whole suit with warm water.It's like working in a Jacuzzi.

Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my bum started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse. Within a few seconds my bum started to burn! I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I realized what had happened.The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit.Now, since I don't have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn't stick to it. However, the crack of my bum was not as fortunate.
When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfishinto the crack of my bum.I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing hysterically

Needless to say I aborted the dive.I was instructed to make three agonizing in-water decompression stops totalling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my chamber dry decompression.When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet.As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my bum as soon as I got in the chamber. The cream put the fire out, but I couldn't poo for two days because my bum was swollen shut.

I thought you'd be interested in some facts I received. It appears that the Immigration March last Monday in Los Angeles was a success! According to data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff, Los Angeles had a reduction in the following:
82% " - reduction " - auto theft
28% "- reduction " - murders/ violent crimes/ rapes
73% "- reduction " - vandalism / tagging
54% " - reduction " - drug related offenses (not including the area surrounding the march)
31% " - reduction " - domestic violence cases
64% " - reduction " - misdemeanor cases (shop lifting, etc.)
CHP reported that last Monday was a record low in the least amount of traffic accidents on South CA freeways. Looks like the immigration rally was well worth it. Maybe we can do this one again sometime. Sure saves the State of California a chunk of money!
Other major cities that were hosting immigrant demonstrations on May 1st. reported similar decreases in their crime rates.... Strange coincidence? I suppose all of these offenses are difficult to pull off while marching with thousands of cameras recording your every move while screaming, chanting, name calling, carrying signs and foreign flags to insult observers. It appears this work and school walkout of May 1st did much to prove the worth of illegal immigrants to this nation. Now if we could hold the next one only in California and get them to march straight south we can then start that much needed fence.
So here's the rant of the week: If these figures are taken as a fair representation of our nations law enforcement experience on May first, it tell me two things:
1. We have identified a significant source of crime and should be focused on this
2. As a whole, immigrants entering this country, wether illegal or not have no intention of adopting the mores of American society.
In light of these two facts, i've decided we need a new law enforcement standard, one that will focus on the issues and protect our values and way of life.

AN APOLOGY FROM A BUSH VOTER

There’s nothing harder in public life than admitting you’re wrong. By the way, admitting you’re wrong can be even tougher in private life. If you don’t believe me, just ask Bill Clinton or Charlie Sheen. But when you go out on the limb in public, it’s out there where everyone can see it, or in my case, hear it.

So, I’m saying today, I was wrong to have voted for George W. Bush. In historic terms, I believe George W. Bush is the worst two-term President in the history of the country. Worse than Grant. I also believe a case can be made that he’s the worst President, period.

In 2000, I was a McCain guy. I wasn’t sure about the Texas Governor. He had name recognition and a lot of money behind him, but other than that? What? Still, I was sick of all the Clinton shenanigans and the thought of President Gore was… unthinkable. So, GWB became my guy.

For the first few months he was just flubbing along like most new Presidents, no great shakes, but no disasters either. He cut taxes and I like tax cuts.

Then September 11^th happened. September 11^th changed everything for me, like it did for so many of you. After September 11^th, all the intramural idiocy of American politics stopped being funny. We had been attacked by a vicious and determined enemy and it was time for all of us to row in the same direction.

And we did for the blink of an eye. I believed the President when he said we were going to hunt down Bin Laden and all those responsible for the 9-11 murders. I believed President Bush when he said we would go after the terrorists and the nations that harbored them.

I supported the President when he sent our troops into Afghanistan, after all, that’s where the Taliban was, that’s where al-Qaida trained the killers, that’s where Bin Laden was.

And I cheered when we quickly toppled the Taliban government, but winced when we let Bin Laden escape from Tora-Bora.

Then, the talk turned to Iraq and I winced again.

I thought the connection to 9-11 was sketchy at best. But Colin Powell impressed me at the UN, and Tony Blair was in, and after all, he was a Clinton guy, not a Bush guy, so I thought the case had to be strong. I was worried though, because I had read the Wolfowitz paper, “The Project for the New American Century.” It’s been around since ‘92, and it raised alarm bells because it was based on a theory, “Democratizing the Middle East” and I prefer pragmatism over theory. I was worried because Iraq was being justified on a radical new basis, “pre-emptive war.” Any time we do something without historical precedent I get nervous.

But the President shifted the argument to WMDs and the urgent threat of Iraq getting atomic weapons. The debate turned to Saddam passing nukes on to terror groups. After 9-11, the risk was too great. As the President said, “The next smoking gun might be a mushroom cloud.” At least that’s what I thought at the time.

I grew up in New York and watched them build the World Trade Center. I worked with a guy, Frank O’Brien, who put the elevators in both towers. I lost a very close friend on September 11^th. 103 floor, tower one, Cantor Fitzgerald. Tim Coughlin was his name. If we had to take out Iraq to make sure something like that, or worse, never happened again, so be it. I knew the consequences. We have a soldier in our house. None of this was theoretical in my house.

But in the months and years since shock and awe I have been shocked repeatedly by a consistent litany of excuses, alibis, double-talk, inaccuracies, bogus predictions, and flat out lies. I have watched as the President and his administration changed the goals, redefined the reasons for going into Iraq, and fumbled the good will of the world and the focus necessary to catch the real killers of September 11^th.

I have watched the President say the commanders on the ground will make the battlefield decisions, and the war won’t be run from Washington. Yet, politics has consistently determined what the troops can and can’t do on the ground and any commander who did not go along with the administration was sacked, and in some cases, maligned.

I watched and tried to justify the looting in Iraq after the fall of Saddam. I watched and tried to justify the dismantling of the entire Iraqi army. I tired to explain the complexities of building a functional new Iraqi army. I urged patience when no WMDs were found. Then the Vice President told us we were in the “waning days of the insurgency.” And I started wincing again. The President says we have to stay the course but what if it’s the wrong course?

It was the wrong course. All of it was wrong. We are not on the road to victory. We’re about to slink home with our tail between our legs, leaving civil war in Iraq and a nuclear armed Iran in our wake. Bali was bombed. Madrid was bombed. London was bombed. And Bin Laden is still making tapes. It’s unspeakable. The liberal media didn’t create this reality, bad policy did.

Most historians believe it takes 30-50 years before we get a reasonably accurate take on a President’s place in history. So, maybe 50 years from now Iraq will be a peaceful member of the brotherhood of nations and George W. Bush will be celebrated as a visionary genius.

But we don’t live fifty years in the future. We live now. We have to make public policy decisions now. We have to live with the consequences of the votes we cast and the leaders we chose now.

After five years of carefully watching George W. Bush I’ve reached the conclusion he’s either grossly incompetent, or a hand puppet for a gaggle of detached theorists with their own private view of how the world works. Or both.

Presidential failures. James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, Jimmy Carter, Warren Harding-— the competition is fierce for the worst of the worst. Still, the damage this President has done is enormous. It will take decades to undo, and that’s assuming we do everything right from now on. His mistakes have global implications, while the other failed Presidents mostly authored domestic embarrassments.

And speaking of domestic embarrassments, let’s talk for a minute about President Bush’s domestic record. Yes, he cut taxes. But tax cuts combined with reckless spending and borrowing is criminal mismanagement of the public’s money. We’re drunk at the mall with our great grandchildren’s credit cards. Whatever happened to the party of fiscal responsibility?

Bush created a giant new entitlement, the prescription drug plan. He lied to his own party to get it passed. He lied to the country about its true cost. It was written by and for the pharmaceutical industry. It helps nobody except the multinationals that lobbied for it. So much for smaller government. In fact, virtually every tentacle of government has grown exponentially under Bush. Unless, of course, it was an agency to look after the public interest, or environmental protection, and/or worker’s rights.

I’ve talked so often about the border issue, I won’t bore you with a rehash. It’s enough to say this President has been a catastrophe for the wages of working people; he’s debased the work ethic itself. “Jobs Americans won’t do!” He doesn’t believe in the sovereign borders of the country he’s sworn to protect and defend. And his devotion to cheap labor for his corporate benefactors, along with his worship of multinational trade deals, makes an utter mockery of homeland security in a post 9-11 world. The President’s January 7^th, 2004 speech on immigration, his first trial balloon on his guest worker scheme, was a deal breaker for me. I couldn’t and didn’t vote for him in 2004. And I’m glad I didn’t.

Katrina, Harriet Myers, The Dubai Port Deal, skyrocketing gas prices, shrinking wages for working people, staggering debt, astronomical foreign debt, outsourcing, open borders, contempt for the opinion of the American people, the war on science, media manipulation, faith based initives, a cavalier attitude toward fundamental freedoms-- this President has run the most arrogant and out-of-touch administration in my lifetime, perhaps, in any American’s lifetime.

You can make a case that Abraham Lincoln did what he had to do, the public be damned. If you roll the dice on your gut and you’re right, history remembers you well. But, when your gut led you from one business failure to another, when your gut told you to trade Sammy Sosa to the White Sox, and you use the same gut to send our sons and daughters to fight and die in a distraction from the real war on terror, then history will and should be unapologetic in its condemnation.

None of this, by the way, should be interpreted as an endorsement of the opposition party. The Democrats are equally bankrupt. This is the second crime of our age. Again, historically speaking, its times like these when America needs a vibrant opposition to check the power of a run-amuck majority party. It requires it. It doesn’t work without one. Like the high and low tides keep the oceans alive, a healthy, positive opposition offers a path back to the center where all healthy societies live.

Tragically, the Democrats have allowed crackpots, leftists and demagogic cowards to snipe from the sidelines while taking no responsibility for anything. In fairness, I don’t believe a Democrat president would have gone into Iraq. Unfortunately, I don’t know if President Gore would have gone into Afghanistan. And that’s one of the many problems with the Democrats.

The two party system has always been clumsy and imperfect, but it has only collapsed once, in the 1850s, and the result was civil war.

I believe, as I have said countless times, the two party system is on the brink of a second collapse. It’s currently running on spin, anger, revenge, and pots and pots and pots of money.

We’re being governed by paper-mache patriots; brightly painted red, white and blue, but hollow to the core. Both parties have mastered the cynical arts of media manipulation and fund raising. They’ve learned the lessons of Watergate and burn the tapes. They have learned to divide the nation for their own gain. They have demonstrated the willingness to exploit any tragedy for personal advantage. The contempt they have for the American people is without parallel.

This is painful to say, and I’m sure for many of you, painful to read. But it’s impossible to heal the country until we’re willing to acknowledge the truth no matter how painful. We have to wean ourselves off sugar coated partisan lies.

With a belated tip of the cap to Ralph Nader, the system is broken, so broken, it’s almost inevitable it pukes up the Al Gores and George W. Bushes. Where are the Trumans and the Eisenhowers? Where are the men and women of vision and accomplishment? Why do we have to settle for recycled hacks and malleable ciphers? Greatness is always rare, but is basic competence and simple honesty too much to ask?

It may be decades before we have the full picture of how paranoid and contemptuous this administration has been. And I am open to the possibility that I’m all wet about everything I’ve just said. But I’m putting it out there, because I have to call it as I see it, and this is how I see it today. I don’t say any of this lightly. I’ve thought about this for months and months. But eventually, the weight of evidence takes on a gravitational force of its own.

I believe that George W. Bush has taken us down a terrible road. I don’t believe the Democrats are offering an alternative. That means we’re on our own to save this magnificent country. The United States of America is a gift to the world, but it has been badly abused and it’s rightful owners, We the People, had better step up to the plate and reclaim it before the damage becomes irreparable.

So, accept my apology for allowing partisanship to blind me to an obvious truth; our President is incapable of the tasks he is charged with. I almost feel sorry for him. He is clearly in over his head. Yet, he doesn’t generate the sympathy Warren Harding earned. Harding, a spectacular mediocrity, had the self-knowledge to tell any and all he shouldn’t be President. George W. Bush continues to act the part, but at this point whose buying the act?

Does this make me a waffler? A flip-flopper? Maybe, although I prefer to call it realism. And, for those of you who never supported Bush, its also fair to accuse me of kicking Bush while he’s down. After all, you were kicking him while he was up.

The train was quite crowded, so a U. S. Marine walked the entire length looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a well dressed, middle-aged, French woman's poodle.

The war-weary Marine asked, "Ma'am, may I have that seat?"

The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular, "Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat."

The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was under that dog.

"Please, ma'am. May I sit down? I'm very tired."

She snorted, "Not only are you Americans rude, you are also arrogant!"

This time the Marine didn't say a word; he just picked up the little dog, tossed it out the train window, and sat down.
